Yesterday, “Opera to Go!” performed on the side stage of the Miller Outdoor Theater. As we were setting up from the performance, a little boy was hanging around with his mother and brother. He was really interested in what we were doing, and asked lots of questions.
Boy: What are you doing?
Me: We’re going to perform an opera.
Boy: Oprah?
Me: No, an opera.
Boy: Opera? What’s that?
Me: It’s like a play, only we sing instead of talk.
Boy: Oh…
He stuck around to watch the performance with his mom and brother, and afterwards was immediately back up talking to us as we were breaking everything down. He loved the performance, and asked lots more questions.
Boy (to Eileen, wearing a kimono and silly hat): Is that what you wear every day?
Eileen: Hahahahah, no no. This is just a costume.
Boy (to Joanna, our pianist): Are you rich?
Joanna: Hahahahahah. No.
In short, it feels like a good day when we can entertain someone who hasn’t even heard the word “opera” before.
